Summary | Join us for Southwest Stories and a talk by Steve Edmiston on Seattle bootlegger and rumrunner Roy Olmstead. |
---|
Description | Known as the “King of the Puget Sound Bootleggers,” Roy Olmstead ran a wildly successful bootlegging business during the 1920s after being fired as a lieutenant in the Seattle Police Department. He became one of the largest employers in Seattle and had a fleet of vessels, automobiles and trucks to bring contraband liquor from British Columbia down the coast to locations on Puget Sound. Arrested in 1924 and convicted of violation of the federal prohibition laws, Olmstead served his sentence until 1931 and for the remainder of his life, he operated a Christian Science prison ministry.
Southwest Stories offers monthly presentations on the history of West Seattle and the Duwamish Peninsula on the third Sundays at the five branches in West Seattle. Presented in partnership with the Southwest Historical Society. |
