SummaryMake the beginning of your book as strong as possible in this free class for fiction and nonfiction writers.
DescriptionEvery word in a book is important, but few are more vital to nail than the first 500 words. Martha Brockenbrough will show you the six elements you need to master to attract the attention of a literary agent or editor – and to make your work as a whole stronger.

Martha Brockenbrough writes fiction and nonfiction for young readers and adults. Her novel "The Game of Love and Death" won the Washington State Book Award, a Pacific Northwest Bookseller Association Award, and was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize. Forthcoming titles include "Alexander Hamilton: Revolutionary," the first young-adult biography of the founding father. She teaches at the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program.
NotesLibrary events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required for this writing class, but seating is limited.

Seating will be on a first come, first seated basis. Doors to the meeting room will open 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. We’ll try our best to make room for all interested writers, but students may be turned away if the room is filled to capacity. Due to the fire code, we cannot exceed the maximum capacity for our rooms.

Please bring a pen/pencil and paper or fully-charged laptop to each class and be prepared to write.

Accommodation requests may be made with seven days advanced notice to LEAP or call (206) 615-1380 (v/tty).

Seattle Writes supports local writers through programs, workshops, write-ins, and by providing spaces to work throughout the city.

The Seattle Writes series is made possible with the generous support of The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Amazon Literary Partnership. Find more Seattle Writes programs and resources here.
