Summary | Join us for a screening of the award winning film “Ray” in celebration of accessibility in film and in recognition of International Day of Persons with Disability! |
---|
Description | December 3 is the official day of celebration and recognition of persons with disabilities. The theme for this year's International Day of Persons with Disabilities is Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology.
Bringing awareness to seamless access to entertainment, information and resources is the goal of International Disability Awareness Day. The feature film “Ray,” a biopic about Ray Charles, a musician blind from the age of seven, provides audio description for blind audience participants, closed captioning for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and a standard voice soundtrack, providing diverse and inclusive access to entertainment through technology.
The day’s celebration will also feature demonstrations of computer and other assistive technology resources available at the Seattle Public Library: Talking Computers, Braille Display Systems, Hand writing guides, etc. These technologies are designed to meet the information access needs of individuals with disabilities.
Over one billion people -- 15 percent of the world’s population -- live with some form of disability. People with disabilities often face barriers to participating in all aspects of society. Access to art and information is an important means to break down barriers and open doors for the inclusion of all. |
